
Introduction to Renewable Energy ESF+ Course

This Industry 4.0 Skillnet course is funded through the ESF+ programme which it is a social funding initiative co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union (www.eufunds.ie) aimed at promoting awareness and advocating for equal opportunities for all individuals to undertake upskilling or reskilling and advance their careers.
This funding is available to ALL professionals employed in the Irish private sector and to Sole Traders.

Overview
This Introduction to Renewable Energy course developed by the Irish Manufacturing Research will provide an overview of green energy technologies available in the market for the decarbonisation of industry. Participants will be able to identify suitable energy optimisation strategies for their company which take into account the company’s site settings, operational requirements and available resources.
Certification: This course is CPD approved by Engineers Ireland – 12 hours CPD points.
Programme Description
This Introduction to Renewable Energy course developed by the Irish Manufacturing Research will provide an overview of green energy technologies available in the market for the decarbonisation of industry. Participants will be able to identify suitable energy optimisation strategies for their company which take into account the company’s site settings, operational requirements and available resources.
Who should attend?
Facility managers, ESG Managers, Energy Managers – from both SMEs and large scale companies.
Course Outline
This course introduces renewable energy, the drivers for energy transition, how to decarbonise energy use and key indicators for RES feasibility assessment. The following technologies will be covered, addressing working principles, possible configurations, advantages and disadvantages and design considerations:
- solar photovoltaics wind turbines
- wind turbines
- battery energy storage systems
- heat pumps
- deep geothermal energy
- combined heat and power systems
- green hydrogen production systems
- biomass based fuels production systems and applications
- technologies to recover waste heat

There will be a brief assignment, participants develop a company plan to implement the learnings on the course.
They will:
- Provide an overview of their company and its energy consumption
- Interpret key economic indicators to assess the green energy technologies
- Select an appropriate renewable energy alternative for their company and justify it based on their onsite resources
- Identify strategies to optimise energy consumption
Diana Vaz Renewable energy technologist at IMR. In the past year, she managed the development of the Green Book – a comprehensive guide that demystified the complexities of several renewable energy technologies – and managed and co-developed a toolkit for assessment of renewable energy technologies, tested through the delivery of 5 feasibility assessments for manufacturing companies.
Diana has a strong mix of experience in applied research and consultancy in the area of renewable energy engineering and sustainability. Academically, she holds a Bachelor and Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, with specialisation in Energy and Environment, and a postgraduate diploma in Circular Economy.
